working hard to mend a life

'working hard to mend a life' : Christine Kelly
I like to use vintage and salvaged fabric and threads in all the things I make, their stains and history are part of the pleasure of using them. I was inspired to stitch this piece in order to include some treasured scraps of mending, a piece of cotton lace from a flea market with impossibly tiny darning stitches, a scrap of chiffon from a vintage blouse with an ingenious zig zag mend.
I stitch to relax and feel calm and to express what I’m feeling.  The continuous running stitches have their purpose in holding together the shredded, and almost disintegrated, cream silk from a Victorian skirt, as well as calming my mind. All the scraps have their stories to tell and I put them together to tell mine

  1. Nothing could be more pleasing and satisfying than to work on these fabrics in our "throw away" world we live in today. Bring back the time worn, cherished cloth of yesterday and hope it will be here tomorrow!

  8. lovely work! I love to stitch and mend. I especially like to mend antique lace and handiwork. I want to preserve them for the future. Also handwork is Zen-like for me.
